FAQ
Can your PBRs be incorporated into a SCADA system?
Yes! We have done this with clients in the past and would be happy to discuss how you can do the same.
FAQ
Does your PBR have temperature control?
Yes! Our photobioreactors feature built-in automated temperature control for optimal algae growth. With a chilling coil and heating element, we can maintain temperatures within 0.1 degrees Celsius. This automated temperature control ensures your culture is always at the ideal temperature for maximum productivity. More temperature control information here.
FAQ
How is microalgae density measured?
The density is measured through our relative density sensor which linearizes the signal of the attenuation through the algae culture. More density details here.
FAQ
Can I run a trial before I buy?
Yes, trials can be arranged! We work with third-party labs that have our algae and seaweed bioreactors and are capable of running these tests and assisting you. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements. More trial information here.
FAQ
Do I need to manually add nutrients to the PBRs?
Nope! Each algae bioreactor is equipped with three peristaltic pumps. These pumps handle nutrient delivery automatically, ensuring precise and consistent application. More information on nutrient addition here.
FAQ
My strain of algae produces a lot of foam. How do you handle that?
The PBRs are equipped with a top overflow harvest that we use to skim off the foam that can accumulate in certain strains. This works to minimize the issues that foam can cause.
FAQ
What’s with the range of densities you list?
Some people prefer to harvest different volumes depending on the growth rates of their algae. For example, clients harvesting a lower volume each day tend to reach higher densities. However, clients who harvest larger volumes per day usually get lower densities of algae, but the higher volume yields an equal, or even greater, number of cells per day. Then within different strains of diatoms (thalassiosira weissflogii for example), many clients have different sized cells within the same species, which further affects the densities maintained with continuous harvests (with larger cell sizes correlating to lower densities, and smaller-sized-cells correlating to higher densities).
FAQ
My algae is really sensitive. Can I culture it in your PBRs?
Some customers have cultured algae very sensitive to shear stress, so the aeration needed to be limited. We can also modify the PBR 100L to include a stirring device internally as required. More information on sensitive algae here.
Glossary
SBR
Seaweed Bioreactor, or Seaweed Bio-Reactor. You can choose your preferred spelling. Our SBRs are designed for culturing macroalgae, as known as seaweed.

What are advantages and disadvantages of photobioreactors?
We get this question a lot. Check out this in-depth comparison on photobioreactors
FAQ
How do you support training customers in other languages?
Though all our content is available in English, Google Translate along with YouTube can put our step-by-step instructions in your preferred language. The automated translation is not always perfect, but along with pictures and video, our instructions are very clear and easy to follow.
